The boys are progressing nicely with a few setbacks and it is REALLY exciting.  Both boys were off the breathing equipment and were doing it all on their own!  However, as it goes, Ethan wasn't able to maintain the solo breathing so he is back on the low flow nasal cannula.  And of course, since they are identical - they felt they should act identical - and the following day, Elliott is back on the low flow cannula as well.

The feedings are still progressing and Ethan and Elliott have both passed their birth weights.  They are right around 3 lbs 14 oz.

Since the boys aren't up to a "full" feeding (30 cc's) yet, they still receive supplemental nourishment through an IV.  In the last update, I mentioned the possibility of a PICC line to replace their umbilical IV's, but a periphery line is also an option.  There are some pros and cons to each of these options.

Although the PICC line is more permanent, it goes directly to a central vein.  It is a bit more invasive and requires us to sign a consent form.  In the event a PICC line does become infected, the infection would quickly spread to the rest of the body.

On the other hand, there the periphery line is more of a "typical" IV and enters through a smaller vein.  Periphery lines are not as long lasting as PICC lines and may only last several hours.  The lines are also difficult to start - with each failed attempt, the IV sight has to be moved to another vein.  As a result, the boys may need to be stuck many more times for this route.

In the end, we (parents, doctors, nurses) agreed to go with periphery lines.  The risk of infection is just not worth it.  Besides, at the rate the boys are increasing their feedings, they shouldn't need the IV for the supplemental nourishment for too much longer.  That's why the success of the feedings is REALLY good news.  Hoo Ha!

Anyway - that's what we've been consumed with for the last few days...

Let me end with some pics and some footage of the boys.  They are looking good!

  2. Oh my GOSH! Can you believe that they would have been in you for several more weeks? You might've had to send in a board game, they are such grown up little men! Amazing. We are so glad they are progressing so well. I wonder if you could even tell them apart if they weren't in separate "enclosures"! We continue to send positive thoughts your way! Thanks for posting on the blog! Love and hugs from the Maggards in OP.
